The Honors Program encourages students to meaningfully engage through courses, experiential learning, and community. Students interested in enriching their experience at Iowa should apply to join the Honors Program.

We set aside sections of general education and lower-level major courses for students in the honors program. Smaller classes facilitated by engaged instructors result in dynamic discussion, deeper understandings of the content, and more meaningful course takeaways.

Through experiential learning, or learning by doing, students gain a deeper understanding of themselves, their goals, and are better equipped to make decisions about their futures. We assist students as they prioritize and curate a set of experiences that best advances their academic, personal, and professional aspirations. You have a limited amount of time in college – explore your options early and sincerely to optimize your time, opportunities, and education.

Fully engaged student benefits of the honors program:

  • Small and engaging classes
  • Community of motivated peers with similar goals (grad school, research, internships)
  • Evening and weekend access to study space in the Blank Honors Center
  • Eligibility to apply for select honors scholarships
  • Honors peer mentors
  • Honors staff and advisors
  • Student leadership opportunities within Honors
  • Opportunities to be a Teaching Assistant for a course
  • Opportunities to write for Honors Publications
  • At Graduation, “University Honors” will be noted on the transcript, diploma, and each student will receive a medallion to wear at graduation.
