Experiential learning, or learning-by-doing, enhances your personal, professional and academic experience. Opportunities include (but are not limited to) study abroad, internships, research, long-term volunteer work, teaching assistants, and relevant employment.

- Earn at least 12 Experiential Learning credits.
- You can start at any time, but must complete all by graduation

Reflection Process
Meaningful experiential learning requires reflection. To get credit for your experiences, you'll complete the honors reflection process on the ICON Honors Program Portal. If you do not have access to the ICON, please email honors-program@uiowa.edu.
The honors reflection process includes a pre-experience questionnaire, a post-experience questionnaire and a narrative.
Credits
- Four experiential learning credits is the maximum number of credits that can be earned per experience per semester.
- A yearly practice of reflection is part of the Honors at Iowa experience, preferably in April or May, projecting hours that you will have accumulated by the end of the semester.
- When an experience continues for two or more semesters, a yearly practice of reflection ensures that your University Honors degree audit accurately shows your progress and helps you to prepare for any upcoming job search, personal statement, or interview. After finishing the first reflection, you may submit a new pre-experience survey and--at the end of the second year--complete the related post-experience survey and narrative reflecting on the period not covered in the first reflection.
- Track your hours. Typically 30 hours = 1 experiential credit.
