Thank you for your interest in Honors at Iowa's scholarship opportunities. Our 2017 competition is now closed.  We expect to open the 2018 competition in mid-November 2017.  To ensure fairness, details about the 2018 application content and essay questions will NOT be available to students PRIOR to the launch of the application in late fall, but prospective applicants can expect an application and selection timeline similar to 2017.

Thanks to the investment of our generous community of supporters, Honors at Iowa is able to offer a range of scholarships and awards to our undergraduate students in each academic year. All current members of the Honors at Iowa community who will be enrolled in 2017-18 are eligible to apply and are encouraged to participate in our annual scholarship competition.

PLEASE NOTE: Entering students who have been admitted to the University of Iowa and have opted into the Honors Program are NOT eligible to apply this cycle, but are encouraged to apply once they have completed their first semester on campus.

To be considered for any of our program scholarships, students:

  • must be a member of the University of Iowa Honors Program (UIHP),
  • must be currently enrolled as a full-time student, and
  • must plan to be enrolled as a full-time student in the 2017-2018 Academic Year.

Important! Honors at Iowa uses a UNIVERSAL online application form, which means that qualified students only need to submit ONE complete application to be considered for most of our scholarship opportunities.

  • Descriptions and deadlines for any award NOT included in our universal application in the Iowa Scholarship Portal are available for review here.

Our universal application is accessed through the Iowa Scholarship Portal.

A complete application package must include the following components:

resume or CV, which should not exceed more than two pages in length,

one letter of recommendation from an individual who is familiar with your academic work and intellectual potential. This letter of support MUST come from a University of Iowa faculty member, lecturer, or teaching assistant. Please note: Honors Program Professional Staff are NOT able to serve as recommenders for this competition as it may create conflicts of interest.

and the 2017-18 Online Application Form, which requires each applicant to respond to the following essay prompt:

How are you?

With this question, anything is on the table, but whatever you choose to discuss, you MUST answer the question for your application to be considered complete.

If you aren’t sure what to write about or how to approach this prompt, do not give up.  It is a deceptively simple question which offers you the opportunity to pause and reflect on your life.  For more guidance, visit the “Develop Your Application” section of Honors website at

Your response should be no less than 500 words and no more than 750.

The deadline for the submission of student applications and faculty recommendations for the Honors 2017-18 Scholarship Competition Application is Monday, February 13, 2017 at 11:59 PM.
