Monisa Saravanan is a senior majoring in Human Physiology with minors in Global Health & Psychology, hoping to someday get an MD and MPH. Originally from Dubuque, Iowa she now lives in Coralville. She has been interested in medicine since forever and is on her way to achieving her goals by being a part of several organizations and her strong involvement with the Honors Program. She is currently researching in Dr. Hanna Stevens' Psychiatry Lab investigating the effects of prenatal stress on mitochondrial DNA. This past summer, she completed an internship with the SVYM NGO in India working with Rheumatoid Arthritis patients in Kenchanahalli, Karnataka. She is very involved in the Honors Program and has assumed several roles including: Honors Summer Ambassador, Honors Outreach Ambassadors Class TA, Honors Peer Advising Staff, and Honors Student Admin.
In her free time, Monisa enjoys volunteering with Iowa City Hospice, reading, and eating ungodly amounts of junk food. She also has an unhealthy obsession with Nodo's grilled cheese (if you haven't had it you definitely need to).
Advice she has for incoming students: Never lose sight of the end goal. College is a horrible experience in the sense that there is always something to push you down, but keeping that end goal and passion in mind will help you achieve everything you set out to do!
