Hello! My name is Maria Mertzenich, and I am a sophomore here at the University of Iowa. I hail from Decorah, which is a small town in northeast Iowa. I am a psychology major on the pre-occupational therapy track; my dream is to one day become an occupational therapist and help patients regain their ability to live their lives to the fullest extent.
Outside of class and my job in the Honors program, I am involved in activities at the Iowa Catholic Newman Center, including organizing volunteer events through the Service and Social Justice Team there. In my free time, I love to read--anything and everything. I am an avid reader and a huge fan of the Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and Legend series. I also enjoy going for walks, taking bike rides, playing games (anything from ultimate frisbee to Monopoly), watching movies and TV shows, and hanging out with friends.
I am excited to say that I will be working as a member of the Discourses Team this year. Discourses works to provide a wide range of exciting activities for Honors students to enjoy. Throughout my time at Iowa, I have participated in Primetime, taken various Honors classes, and lived in the Honors House LLC. I love being a part of Honors at Iowa: I can confidently say that it is one of my favorite parts of being a Hawkeye! Feel free to stop by the third-floor desk in the BHC and visit with me if you have any questions about Honors. I am looking forward to an exciting year of serving as an Honors Student Staff member!
