University of Iowa

Hi! My name is Katie Gabel and I am a second-year student here at the University of Iowa. I am from a far away land called Palos Park, Illinois, a suburb about forty-five minutes southwest of Chicago. My journey has brought me to Iowa to major in Speech and Hearing Sciences and minor in Spanish and American Sign Language.

I have a passion for helping others, experiencing new cultures and languages, going on adventures, and, most importantly, ice cream. This past summer I roamed Europe by working on a U.S. military base in Stuttgart, Germany as a Camp Adventure counselor (my ice cream addiction was temporarily replaced by one for gelato). I got a taste of eight magnificent new countries and had to figure out the public transportation systems in about seven different languages. My love of different cultures, people, and languages was only magnified after this summer!

Being a part of the Honors Program at the University of Iowa has given me countless opportunities to grow as a person. I encourage you to take advantage of all the programs, resources, people, and classes that the Honors Program offers in your time here, because they are each created specifically for your enjoyment ad betterment. Don't be nervous about attending an event or reaching out to any of the Honors Program members! If you ever have any questions, worries, or you just need someone to go to an event with you, feel free to email me at Thanks for reading!
