Experiential learning, or learning-by-doing, is the personal acquisition of knowledge through practice. Honors at Iowa encourages critical reflection on experience and we award academic credit for experiential learning when it includes analysis of the experience. Even if casual talk occasionally contrasts “experiential learning” to “book learning,” Honors at Iowa takes care to make detailed, mutually informative connections between them.

Simply to serve, intern, practice, or experience are not by themselves to engage in experiential learning of the university sort, because the experience can go beyond systematic learning. The closest and often the strongest links held through learning by doing are within academic practices. Accordingly, Honors at Iowa has students learn by conducting research, presenting papers and posters, teaching classes, writing articles and stories and poems, editing work by others, making films or dramas or music, and more. These experiences integrate academic learning and professional practice through practicums, community service, workshops, practice competitions, public demonstrations, and such. When some of these exercises include contributions to society beyond refining professional knowledge and skill, students participate in versions of service learning.
