Udall Scholarships

The Udall Scholarships provide $5,000 for study by sophomores and juniors interested in a career related to the environment or in Native American tribal and tribal health issues.  Applicants must have GPAs of 3.5 or higher.  They also must demonstrate strong commitments to these concerns through service, research, or extracurricular activities.

Jacqueline Leonard graduates with honors. The Udall Foundation names up to eighty new Udall Scholars each year.  This enables the University of Iowa to nominate as many as six students each spring.

Iowa’s first Udall Scholar has come with Jacqueline Leonard in 2007.  In 2008, Meredith DeBoom has followed in Leonard’s footsteps.  And in 2009, Christopher Page has extended the present series of Iowa winners.

Applications are due to the Udall Foundation in March.  Therefore interested students at Iowa should contact the Honors Scholarship Director by the preceding December — earlier if possible.  As with other scholarships, good applications for the Udall award can take lots of work.

In 1992, Congress authorized the Morris K. Udall Foundation in 1992 to honor Congressman Udall’s legacy of public service.  Udall served in the U.S. House of Representatives for three decades.  Colleagues considered his career to be distinguished by civility, integrity, and consensus.  He championed the rights of Native Americans and Alaska natives, using his leadership in Congress to strengthen tribal self-governance.  He became especially renowned as a national champaion of environmental policy.  The Udall Foundation is supported by a trust fund in the U.S. Treasury and contributions from the private sector.
