Honors Research Connections

Honors at Iowa encourages students to experience the conduct of research as soon as they are ready, and we know that some are ready for research from the beginning of their college work.  On the other hand, we also know that it is no service to throw students into research situations that do not connect strongly to their developing skills and interests.

For the student who recognizes this readiness, at whatever stage, Honors offers the Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates to link the student’s interests with the needed mentor, money, academic credit, travel, or other resources.  Honors Research Connections are an Iowa invention that also taps the faculty capacity to recognize Honors Students who are ready for research.

The idea is to encourage professors of early Honors classes to join in recognizing who is ready for specific sorts of research.  Then Honors helps fund some of those professors to hire the ready and interested students as assistants for following semesters of research directly related to their courses.  In this way, Honors enables students to make strong, early connections with faculty members confident that the students can do the particular research at issue.  Furthermore the platform courses give students running starts toward contributing effectively to the research.
