Student Staff Program Descriptions

Below are the descriptions of different programming positions for student staff.  Keep in mind that these are short descriptions and that responsibilities may change from year to year.  Each programmer is responsible for working the 3rd floor desk for several hours (5-20 per week) based on the student’s preference.  Not all student staff members will have programming responsibilities at all times.  However, most of our staff members take the opportunity to be involved as a programmer with the UIHP.

 

Arts Programmer

The goal of the Arts programming is to give students the opportunity to experience and learn about different cultural events in the community by attending complementary programming to up coming events.  The program give students the opportunity to have an inside look at different aspects relating to the event such as behind the scene tours, special Q&A sessions with the performers, visits to community organizations or talks with student groups and professors.  Students that attend these events also have a chance of receiving a ticket to the event.  Some past performances we have given tickets to include: Capitol Steps, Into the Woods, and the Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company.  Duties will include but are not limited to:

  1. Selecting community and university arts events (musicals, plays, ballets) to attend with honors students
  2. Coordinating an educational activity that gives students an inside look at different aspects relating to each performance
  3. Preparing attendance lists and program evaluations for the Coordinator of Student      Programs
  4. Enter Attendance information into an Access Database
  5. Meeting with Coordinator of Student Programs on a weekly basis
  6. Working on the 3rd floor and fulfill the duties that keep the space running smoothly

Art Gallery Programmer

The 3rd and 4th floor of the Blank Honors Center is designed as Art Gallery Space.  This term can be interpreted to encompass all fields of study here at the University of Iowa.  The ideal situation would be to have some work displayed on both floors all year long.  Perferably with each showing lasting approximately two weeks.  Individuals that have showings would have the opportunity to have an open house to receive guests to ask about their work.  Duties of the Art Gallery Programmer will include but are not limited to:

  1. Finding individuals to display their work in the BHC
    (with emphasis on the Art Department)
  2. Working with the ‘artists’ during set-up and take-down of their work
  3. Keeping records of the artists that have and will show in the BHC
  4. Enter Attendance information into an Access Database
  5. Meeting with Coordinator of Student Programs on a weekly basis
  6. Working on the 3rd floor and fulfill the duties that keep the space running smoothly

Diversity Programmer

The Culture and Diversity Program provides honors students with unique opportunities to redefine their comfort zones, meet new people, and encounter new ideas. Some of our past events include the Iowa Women’s Music Festival, the Cultural Diversity Fair, hosting film screenings and discussions, and more. Each event can be different and so planning and preparation varies from program to program. As the programmer, some of the duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Planning 3 to 5 programs per semester
  2. Meeting and talking to students and others from diverse backgrounds
  3. Connecting and communicating with other departments and groups across campus (e.g. Opportunity at Iowa, various student organizations)
  4. Contacting presenters
  5. Publicizing events through posters, listservs, student organizations, and word-of-mouth
  6. Managing the honors-diversity email
  7. Preparing attendance lists and program evaluations for the Coordinator of Student Programs
  8. Enter Attendance information into an Access Database
  9. Meeting with Coordinator of Student Programs on a weekly basis
  10. Work on the 3rd floor and fulfill the duties that keep the space running smoothly

Discourses Programmer

The goal of Discourses programming is to get students together to learn and talk about interesting stuff. Student discussion and debate is strongly encouraged. Students are invited to suggest topics, and events are organized around these. Discourse programs typically involve an expert, usually a faculty member. Events could be organized in lots of ways. Films and small group discussions, for example, are other good options. Some of the past topics of discussion include string theory, the psychology of brainwashing, global warming, science and religion, and moral relativism. Duties of the programmer include but are not limited to:

  1. Gathering suggestions from students and generating ideas for Discourse topics
  2. Connecting with professors across campus
  3. Scheduling programs during times that are optimal for students and faculty
  4. Advertising events through email, listservs, student organizations, etc.
  5. Preparing attendance lists and program evaluations for the Coordinator of Student Programs

Iowa City Foreign Relations Council (ICFRC) Liaison

ICFRC is a local non-profit organization whose members are interested in learning more about current events in global affairs.  Members meet approximately once every two weeks while school is in session for a catered lunch and a speech by a distinguished expert in a topic of current international interest.  Past speakers have included President George H.W. Bush, Vice President Walter Mondale, British Consul General Andrew Seaton, United States Congressman Jim Leach, and University of Iowa Provost and diplomatic historian Michael Hogan. The ICFRC Liaison coordinates efforts between ICFRC and the University Honors Program.  Some of the duties will include but are not limited to:

  1. Meet monthly with the ICFRC Program Committee to select noteworthy speakers and determine future luncheon topics 
  2. Recruit honors students through email communication to attend luncheons and provides that information to International Program staff
  3. Develop further opportunities for honors students to learn more about international affairs.  In the past, those opportunities have included encouraging honors student participation in other free events sponsored by International Programs, such as International Mondays 
  4. Coordinate student volunteers to set-up and clean-up at luncheons, and keep track of 10,000 hours show hours for luncheon volunteers.

Media Programmer

The goal of media programming is to capture students in action for various UIHP publications and digitize past material. Some duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Having knowledge of the audio and video technology utilized by the UIHP (cameras, DV cameras, editing software, projector audio/visual equipment, etc.)
  2. Designing and heading programming events that are centered around movies, music, video games, etc.
  3. Updating archived videotapes, pictures, and other items to digital media
  4. Working with other programmers to do joint programming events that include the utilization of media
  5. Preparing attendance lists and program evaluations for the Coordinator of Student      Programs
  6. Enter Attendance information into an Access Database
  7. Meeting with Associate Director of UIHP on a weekly basis

Presidential Scholars Programmer

The goal of Presidential Scholar Programming is to give a setting in which Presidential Scholars can socialize and build relationships with each other and faculty/community leaders.  Also the programs are to encourage students to become involved in their community through service events or attending local events.  Some past events have included: representing a family for Dance Marathon, Scoops for Scholars, Old Capitol Tours, Trivial Pursuit Challenge, Intramural teams, IWP reading, and Presidential Tea Time.  Duties will include but are not limited to:

  1. Plan both social and academic activities for Presidential Scholarship winners 
  2. Assist the Honors Advisor in setting up and running the Presidential Mentoring program.
  3. Prepare attendance lists and program evaluations for the Coordinator of Student      Programs
  4. Enter Attendance information into an Access Database
  5. Meet with the Scholarship Coordinator on a weekly basis
  6. Work on the 3rd floor and fulfill the duties that keep the space running smoothly

University of Iowa Honors House Programmer

The goal of the UI Honors House Programmer is to enrich the community that is built within Daum by engaging them in the Honors Program and the variety of programs it offers. It is one of the few programming positions that has the flexibility to incorporate many different events, from social to intellectual to community-based, and it is also distinctive in that you have a quite large target population—over 400 students in Daum, of a variety of backgrounds and ages. You’ll get to know well the group of students you’re working with, and foster the community part of the Learning Community! Some past programs have included a star gazing field trip and Sunday Night Live, a well received talent show for honors students. Duties of the programmer include but are not limited to:

  1. Working with resident assistants in Daum Residence Hall, the Executive Board of Associated Daum, and the Daum Hall Coordinator
  2. Partnering with other UIHP student staff members to plan events
  3. Managing the Learning Communities listserv
  4. Making connections and working with professors
  5. Planning and publicizing 2-3 events per semester
  6. Preparing attendance lists and program evaluations for the Coordinator of Student      Programs

Volunteering Programmer

The goal of the Honors Volunteering Program is to build positive relationships between University of Iowa honors students and the community they live in. General duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Maintaining and establishing contacts between community organizations in need of volunteers and the University of Iowa Honors Program
  2. Planning at least three medium-sized group volunteering activity per semester.
  3. Attending the biannual volunteer fairs
  4. Contacting possible organizations by email or phone and working with the organization to plan the logistics of the event (time, transportation, number of volunteers, etc)
  5. Recruiting volunteers through announcements over the honors and the volunteering listservs, presenting at freshman orientations, and other means of advertising
  6. Managing the volunteer listserv and communicating with volunteers via email  
  7. Facilitating the volunteering event, including setting up and/or providing transportation
  8. Preparing attendance lists and program evaluations for the Coordinator of Student      Programs
  9. Enter Attendance information into an Access Database
  10. Meeting with Coordinator of Student Programs on a weekly basis
  11. Working  on the 3rd floor and fulfilling the duties that keep the space running smoothly

Web Designer Assistant

The goal of Web Programming is to show off the activities of the UIHP by way of the Honors Program website.  Some of the duties will be but are not limited to:

  1. Have knowledge of Dreamweaver.
  2. Have knowledge of Fireworks.
  3. Have knowledge of Contribute.
  4. Have knowledge of Google Calendar and Picasa.
  5. Work with the Honors Professional staff on the information that needs to be updated on the UIHP website.
  6. Work with the Student Staff on the information for programming that needs to be updated on the UIHP website.
