Honors Memberships

Many students qualify for Honors membership when they earn admission to Iowa.  Their high-school work, test scores, or previous college courses show a readiness to take advantage of the opportunities we offer.  Other entering students with evidence of strong talents can petition for membership.  And once enrolled at Iowa, students can qualify for Honors courses and activities by sustaining a 3.33 (B+) overall UI GPA (grade-point-average).  Please click on the right for details.

Honors memberships become contingent if overall UI GPAs sink below 3.33.  Then students continue to enjoy full access to Honors resources for the next semester.  But they must use it to raise their grades at Iowa back to 3.33 or higher in order to extend their memberships further.  If not, the memberships lapse.

Until they have earned 72 semester-hours of college credit, former Iowa Honors Students may requalify simply by meeting the UI GPA standard.  Past that point, students who meet the GPA standard may petition for admission or readmission to Honors.

To graduate as members of the University of Iowa Honors Program, students must earn overall UI GPAs of 3.33.  From Fall 2008 onward, students who do their first years of college work at Iowa also must earn at least one Honors Commendation to graduate as UIHP members.  To graduate with honors in a major, students must graduate also as UIHP members.
