Admissions

Collegiate and Departmental
Honors Programs

Almost all undergraduate colleges and departments at the University of Iowa have honors programs focused on their majors.  Thus students who complete special honors seminars and projects required in, say, English or History or Biology can graduate with honors in that major.

These collegiate and departmental programs for honors education focus on the third and fourth years of study in student majors, whereas the University of Iowa Honors Program prepares for major studies through classes and activities that begin in the first and second years of study.

Standards for admission to a collegiate or departmental honors program are established by the college or department.  Many ask that students establish high grades in the major in addition to qualifying for membership in the University of Iowa Honors Program.  But specific standards vary from one major to another.  So please check with the sponsoring college or department to learn its requirements for admission to honors work in the major — as well as its requirements for graduation with honors in the major.
