Honors Pick One
To encourage entering students to get engaged in campus activities, the University of Iowa asks students in their first year to explore early a few different activities in the fall semester — then to “Pick One” for participation into the spring term as well. Honors provides many activities that qualify, and we even add year-end certificates to celebrate each student’s sustained participation in one or more of these Honors Activities.
In fact, there are two routes to certificates for Honors Pick One. You can specialize in one activity by taking part in at least three of its sessions over the year. And if you make at least three sessions for each of two activities, such as Honors Discourses and Honors Volunteers for example, you earn Honors Pick One certificates for both. Or you can generalize by checking out any five sessions spread across several Honors Activities. You can even earn one certificate for Honors Activities in general through five scattered sessions plus another certificate for, say, Honors Diversity via three more sessions focused in that specific series of activities.
All Honors Activities spice enjoyment with education. The Honors Arts series links free tickets for local events to behind-the-scenes talks with their directors, composers, stars, and the like. Honors Volunteers take a service-learning approach to their activities, so they minister to community needs while learning about contexts and reflecting on services. For more personalized information about activities that qualify for Honors Pick One, please take advantage of the Honors Activities Fair and the Open House that follow the Honors Welcome Dinner on Saturday, August 23. There we offer poster presentations for each activity. Honors Students who know each activity first-hand are on-hand to share experiences and answer questions.
