Honors Programs
Iowa City Foreign Relations Council
As a university town, the community surrounding the University of Iowa features extraordinary concentrations of opportunities for art, athletics, culture, politics, writing, and more. The importance of Iowa to presidential elections means exceptional access to politics throughout the United States. Yet the State of Iowa has long paid terrific attention to international relations, too, and this helps to explain the success in Iowa City of an institution usually reserved to the major metropolis in America: the foreign-relations club.
Even better, Honors at Iowa sponsors free participation for many of its interested students in the Iowa City Foreign Relations Council. Through a listserv specifically for students concerned with world affairs, Honors keeps people aware of coming speakers and programs from the ICFRC. Then it provides tickets to share in ICFRC luncheons. Almost weekly, the ICFRC hosts expert discussions of
global issues by statesmen, scholars, Nobelists, journalists, etc. The catered lunches are special treats as well, typically sampling cuisines from foreign cultures represented by the speakers or their topics.
