Organizations
Organizations of, by, and for students are prominent aspects of Honors at Iowa. Some of the organizations are sponsored by Honors and some not; some are just for Honors Students, and many are open to the campus as a whole. Government and politics are keen concerns of many Honors Students, and Iowa’s first-in-the-nation position for presidential nominations adds to campus, local, and state activities. The Honors Advisory Committee works with the Director on initiatives for the Honors Program. Iowa’s teams for mock trial and intercollegiate debate are among the country’s best, and Honors supports participation in both kinds of forensics.
Honors encourages performance societies in music, theater, and dance. We promote campus chapters of several national honor societies. And for our fiftieth anniversary, we are launching a campus-wide Honors Student Organization.
We encourage Honors Students to participate in living-learning communities, while sponsoring the largest on campus. We support a society of Presidential Scholars that undertakes legacy and other sorts of projects. And Honors Students take great advantage of student positions on many committees where they join faculty and staff in managing major parts of university life.
