Academics
Honors at Iowa is an intellectual community. It is a network of explorations, conversations, and other interactions that turn on learning. The learning cultivates talents for continuing inquiry, art, and action — from college years onward. For this reason, Honors at Iowa is a community of opportunity, supporting students as they develop through many personal initiatives, especially in academics.
Honors education generally begins in classes. Yet it leaps beyond them into larger fields, their intersections, and further frontiers of knowledge. Honors at Iowa provides academic credit for many kinds of classes offered specifically to Honors Students. It also awards credit for diverse experiences of academic importance that arise beyond classrooms. The classes and experiences include many settings for learning by doing, an educational emphasis of Honors at Iowa.
To compound these possibilities, Iowa connects a number of its Honors Classes and Experiences into distinctive sets. Such “Constellations” teach students how to relate learning from different fields to common topics. They increase the coherence of honors education without requiring a core curriculum. Then they earn “Honors Commendations” for transcripts and graduations.
